Apple is about to introduce a new iPad. Good — for I need to buy a new one. I left my old one with my mother. When visiting my folks in India, I decided to leave my Macbook Air at home — I didn’t want to write and just wanted to spend some quality time with the family. Instead, I carried my iPad 2. (I don’t leave home without it.)
When at home, I did a FaceTime call with my siblings who also live overseas. I handed over the iPad to my mom. She had this look of amazement, one of pure unadulterated joy as she chatted with her grandson.
Being a broadband nerd who cannot stop thinking and talking about the need for speed and connectivity, I felt this moment captured essentially what I, and by extension GigaOM, am all about — connectedness and the change it brings. For once, the technology didn’t matter. …
Telecom have using this as their marketing line for years. But you choose to ignore them. Another example of Apple Fan’s just completely ignoring everyone else, Actually sorry Everything else. I know Om Maliks well off so its likely his Mum has Broadband in India , w Wireless, why because Facetime does not work without it. It drives me nuts with my Iphone.
I am interested what Apple introduce’s on Wednesday, I’m picking higher Res Ipad and maybe various Sizes.
Oh yes, of course, in the US Ma Bell has been guilt tripping sons and daughters with the “Call home” schtick for generations.
I wasn’t saying or implying anything vastly original in Om’s article … just that I (rabid fanboy that I am) enjoyed it. And Apple have made it easier, haven’t they?
FaceTime? I’ve only ever played with it (i.e. within e same house) I use Skype more… but I tell you what I AM using which is sweet: iMessages — can send and receive messages/pix between iPads with my son while he’s connected to the network at school … very cool.
And he has/we all have an iCloud mail address … with push notifications it’s close to IM … but I think iMessages have a bright future.
Re the new iPads we’re expecting his week: yeah, good on them. Looking forward to seeing them. That foot- to-the-floorboards approach to product development — constantly making your own product obsolete — stood Apple in good stead for iPods, huh?

I’m convinced technology is taking us backwards – further into tribalism and stone age decay.
Look at blogs for instance – its like an evolutionary regressive move. I can hear the sound of knuckles dragging on the ground already.
But what would i know – i’m only a working class battler who (apparently) voted for Winston Peters. Apparently (if one looks at history) i’m also a falsely accused alleged anti semite as well.
Now i know how the armenians and the greeks of smyrna felt.
