I had a good chat with the owner of a very successful ad-supported blog/news/opinion site today. We discussed the ad-blocker issues and other matters — including the shallow 'dirty tricks' some sites play to try to maximise their page views/impressions vs clicks and 'effectiveness' -- all with an eye on their rankings and perceived value to advertisers.

And he told me some tricks the advertisers try to use too! Let's discuss that later.

It is a game with layers, for sure, but I get the impression he agrees with me that the reader comes first — has to come first ... and the reader community should be king, not 'monetizing' the site ... anything else will perish.
